This week saw some of the lowest temperatures I have seen in my life! -11, and multiple days below freezing!
I am so very blessed to have some incredibly generous people in my life, none more valuable this week than Mrs Nichols – who knitted me the most beautiful scarf in Merino wool (Dad, please note!), and purple of course! Which I’ve hardly taken off all week!
Words with different meanings (Aus vs US) have made communicating interesting, and my accent has caused a few entertaining moments – none more so than this week, when I ordered a tuna and salad sandwich on dark bread for lunch, but got a chicken and cheese sandwich on white bread, with a black coffee!! There was lots of catching up on classes this week, after spending a week at NCBA. Livestock and Meat Eval class had live steers run in for student assessment, I still struggle with the metric conversion, but enjoy the practical aspects of this class immensely! This week my Beef Systems class headed out to the Fink Family Ranch – this was one of the most enjoyable and incredible stories that I have heard since arriving in Manhattan. Both K –State Grads, this husband and wife team purchased their first cow in 1977, and didn’t own land until 2006! At one stage they were selling 400 bulls from 300 rented acres. I sincerely hope that this is not the last time that I encounter this family!
Saturday saw me head to my very first K-State Basketball game, and although they lost, the atmosphere and spirit I experienced was incredible – a true comparative rival for a Crows vs Port Adelaide Showdown back home! My sporting experience was made complete: HUGELY tall basketballers, cheerleaders, band…. And to make it truly K-State unique, the Wabash – which this Australian found incredibly entertaining and funny!
